A Legacy
I can still smell the dust in the air as I sit with my family flipping through my family’s old photo albums through the holiday season. The sound of the plastic film releasing from the adhesive as we add a new photo, a new memory, to the back of the book. As a kid I treasured those albums. They were, to me, the most valuable thing in the world. That book was our family’s story. I remember the sad tales of poverty and change my family endured but it never came alive until I got to hold these old photos and see the desperation in my great grandfathers’ eyes as they stood for family photos in front of their home.
For a while, I didn’t add photos to the book. I mean I lived this life, right? I won’t forget what made me, well. me. But I realized those photos are not for me. They are for future generations who have only been told stories of me, or who only know me as a distant relative. They bring life to those who are no longer here, or those who can’t tell their story. Some bring peace, love, and warmth every time you look at them. Others bring a sense of pride and purpose. They are memories of a time that no longer exists today. They are a life that has been forgotten.
